How to rework your CV with AI
Let an AI chat tool interview you about your work. Turn the answers into a fuller CV, then shape it for each job.
Eight short chapters, with prompts to copy. Use any AI chat tool, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.
Start here
After this chapter you will know what you need and how long it takes.
This guide is for anyone who finds writing a CV hard. Many neurodivergent people do, including people with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism or dyslexia.
What you need
- Your CV. If you have no CV yet, a list of your jobs, volunteering and courses is enough.
- An AI chat tool. Use any one, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. The free version is enough.
- About 30 minutes. You can stop at any point and come back later.
Why is a CV so hard to write?
After this chapter you will know which parts AI can take off your hands.
- You forget what you did. Remembering your own work when you need it is hard. Good work from two years ago is gone from your head.
- The blank page. Starting is often the hardest part.
- Talking about yourself feels wrong. Many people find it uncomfortable to describe their own strengths.
- Every job wants something different. Changing your CV for each job takes energy you may not have.
An AI chat tool helps with all four. It asks you questions, so you do not have to remember on your own. It writes the first draft, so you never start from a blank page.
Step 1: Make a place for your CV
After this step, the AI knows your work history and keeps it for every chat.
- Open your AI chat tool. Make a new project. In ChatGPT and Claude, it is called a project. In Gemini, make a Gem.
- Name it “My job search”.
- Upload your CV to it. If your tool has no projects, start a new chat and paste your CV in.
The AI can use everything you add to the project in every chat inside it. You only upload your CV once.
Step 2: Let the AI interview you
After this step you will have a full profile of your skills, in your own words.
Your CV shows a little of what you can do. A short interview brings out the rest: the problems you solved, the people you helped and the skills you use without thinking.
Here is my CV. Interview me about my work. Ask me one question at a time about my jobs, what I achieved and my skills. Help me build a fuller picture than my CV shows. When we finish, write it all up as a profile document I can keep.
Tips
- Answer by voice if it is easier. Most AI apps let you speak instead of type.
- Take breaks. You can stop and come back to the same chat later.
- Ask for a different question. If a question is unclear, type “Ask that in a different way.”
- Save the profile. Copy it into a document. Add it to your project, so the AI can use it every time.
Step 3: Shape your CV for each job
After this step you will have a CV, a cover letter and interview answers for one job.
Now the AI knows your work. When you find a job you like, give it the advert.
Here is a job advert: [paste the advert]. Using my profile, tell me which of my skills match it. Tell me what is missing. Then suggest changes to my CV for this job. Only use things that are true about me.
Write a short cover letter for this job. Use my profile. Keep it under 250 words. Use plain, friendly words that sound like me.
What are the five questions they are most likely to ask me in an interview for this job? Help me answer each one with a real example from my profile.
Keep each version of your CV. Name it with the company and the job, such as “CV, Tidewell, Operations Lead”.
Step 4: Make it easy to read, then check it
After this step your CV is ready to send.
Many employers use software to read CVs before a person does. This is called an applicant tracking system. It reads simple layouts best.
Make my CV clear and easy to read. Use simple headings, short bullet points and one column. Do not use tables or pictures. Keep it to two pages.
Check before you send
- Read every line. AI can add things that are not true. Take out anything that is not.
- Check names and dates. Make sure job titles, company names and dates are right.
- Make it sound like you. Change any words you would never use.
- Keep private details out of the chat. Leave your address and phone number off until the final copy.
Where does Humble fit?
Humble is optional. It keeps each CV with the job it is for.
When you send many applications, the CVs, adverts and chats pile up. You need the right CV for the right job.
Humble keeps each job together with everything you made for it.
1. Make a task for each job. Pick the closing date as the due date.
2. Link the CV you made for that job. A Google Doc links straight to the task.
3. Link the AI chat where you shaped it. Click Humble in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and choose the task.
Common questions
Clear answers to the questions people ask most.
They may not, but some ask. Be honest if they do. Use AI to help you start and to check your work. The facts and the final words should be yours.
Yes. Ask it to use a style or colours you like, for a CV you send by email. For online forms, a plain layout is safer, because software reads plain CVs best.
Ask the AI to help you explain each gap in one short line. For example: “Help me explain a two-year gap when I was caring for a family member.” You do not have to give private details.
No. The free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude can do everything in this guide. Paid plans let you do more each day.
Yes. Start with a list of the jobs, volunteering and courses you have done. Paste the list in place of a CV. The interview in step 2 fills in the rest.
